CCKF Ltd (Research & Development Lab)
Title: FP7 - Research Proposal Summary.
Target Partner:
We are seeking to expand our academic collaborations in 2009. We have identified a number of themes within the European Seventh Framework Programme which are of particular interest to CCKF’s R&D lab. Working with partners from the HCI, Cognitive Psychological, Human Factors and the adaptive learning communities we are open to expressions of interest from partners to join in our research proposal. We are also willing to consider joining an existing consortium proposal as a project partner.
Keywords: Artificial intelligence; Human Factors, HCI, Cognitive Psychology, Adaptive Learning, Adaptive Hypermedia.
Proposal Details:
The CCKF R&D lab draws on a wealth of expertise both as a team and individually (members have participated in several European Actions - FP5, FP6). Lab members have published in a variety of interrelated domains: Artificial Intelligence, Pedagogical Development, Software Engineering, Statistics and Mathematics. The R&D lab is a key element of CCKF, an innovative software development company. CCKF has strategically positioned the inclusion of projects under the European Seventh Framework Programme as an integral part of its research vision. CCKF has identified the following broad research areas, from which we would like to receive expressions of interest from potential partners.
The long term goal of this FP7 funded research is to develop a highly advanced intelligent & adaptive learning system. The intended system will address the key issues of:
1) How to provide an integrated adaptive learning system across different subject areas, e.g. Mathematics, Sciences, Linguistics, Business, etc…
2) How to address the needs of users at different life stages, e.g. primary, secondary, third level education and CPD.
3) How to utilise cognitive methods to: maintain student motivation & interaction, increase long term memory, identify & deter plagiarism and adapt content to learning style & behaviour.
4) How to utilise new technology to address innovative technology directions such as pervasive learning.
The research identified in our proposal (full proposal available to potential partners), is the first phase of what is intended to be a long term strategic knowledge collaboration between CCKF and the partners. In this first phase the focus is on the exploration and ultimately the development of techniques to address human factors affecting intelligent adaptive learning systems. The proposed work areas that CCKF has identified are:
1) State of the art review - to explore all literature in the field and to place oneself to the forefront of future cited papers.
2) Behavioural Modelling – Research & development of an interface level interactivity metric.
3) Personalised Feedback – Development of an intelligent (responsive) feedback approach.
4) Cognitive Overloading & Influencing - Exploration & determination of protocols to facilitate novel content delivery strategies.
5) Profiling of learner – Exploration & determination of factors that affect learning.
6) Instructional Design: Constructivist (& future extension to Collaborative) e-learning, exploration & determination of methods to create an effective adaptive learning module incorporating constructivist (& collaborative) methodologies.
The strategic benefits of this project are manifold. Two key elements are:
1) CCKF and partners (Academic, research institute) will benefit from a transfer of knowledge, e.g. research commercialisation, strategic research vision, state of the art researching in pedagogical methods, primary-secondary-third level education sector knowledge, AI, Adaptive Hypermedia, HCI, Software Engineering etc.
2) The adaptive learning community (both institutional and corporate) will benefit from the publication of research findings in the areas of human factors for adaptive learning systems and advanced AI algorithms for adaptive learning systems.
Programme (Collaboration EU R&D): FP7, FP7-PEOPLE, FP7-SECURITY.
Expiry Date: 2009-12-31
Work programme area(s): (FP7-PEOPLE PEOPLE-2007-3-1.IAPP ) Marie Curie Action: “Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways”

On behalf of Dr. Athanasios Drigas who is the Scientific Coordinator of Net Media Lab I send you a short description of our lab. It belongs within the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National Centre for Scientific Research (N.C.S.R.) “Demokritos”.
N.C.S.R. “DEMOKRITOS” is the largest scientific research centre in Greece, consisting of eight research institutes. Net Media Lab began its operation informally at the beginning of the 1990’s in the framework of the N.C.S.R. “D” Computer Centre. It was then included in the Services Provision Laboratories of the General Secretariat of Research and Technology.
Net Media Lab of NCSR “D” is active and has long experience in activities spanning the areas of the R&D domain of telecommunication services, the internet, multimedia services (portals, CD-ROMs etc) and e-services (e-learning, e-inclusion, e-testing, e-health, e-psychology, e-government etc), for various target groups such as students, teachers, handicapped etc. The department has been running more than 30 EU and National projects in the last five years.
The laboratory is fully equipped in both hardware and software standards with powerful network, computer, multimedia and communications infrastructures, as well as with modern and advanced programs that support and cover the needs of the laboratory’s activities.
The laboratory’s workforce is specialized in the design, development and operation of the communications, networks and multimedia as well as in their electronic services (e-services) and covers the entire educational spectrum level (researchers, doctors, MSc and support technicians.
